You live in a forest that is prone to fires and you have to leave in an emergency and roads are blocked so you head on a route you are unfamiliar with and an emergency occurs.  Your details about what direction you went and intended on going will be helpful.

Ideally you can leave some clues if you do walk such as leave a water bottle filled with rocks.  Then a mile away another.  So that is the way you went.

You can simply purchase a satellite beacon gizmo for $250-$350 and if in danger trigger it for a response from united states authorities to begin a search and rescue.  

Don't trust GPS on off the road trails for accuracy unless it is a dedicate app for such trails.

Bring food and water and stay in your vehicle.  Don't try to walk out.

Include people you may know who can be contacted, and any local contacts you may be aware of.
